Studio Born's Golden A' Design Award Winner Demonstrates Authentic Nostalgia Through Primary Source Investigation
Deep archival research transforms nostalgic brand aesthetics from generic imitation into authentic storytelling.
The depth of archival research often determines whether nostalgic brand identity resonates as unmistakably genuine. When Studio Born designers Ebru Sile Goksel and Ipek Eris Ugurlu developed the La Plage brand identity for an Istanbul restaurant and bar, they systematically studied archival photographs from the 1950s era. The team examined poses, backgrounds, clothing choices, and the particular quality of leisure that defined postwar coastal culture. Each image contributed specific elements to a cohesive illustration series. The resulting brand identity features vintage-inspired figures and whimsical scenes that feel authentic because they emerge from authentic source material. Terracotta, green, and gold palette choices, playful slogans like "Girls just wanna have sun," and foil-stamped tactile details all trace their lineage to careful historical investigation rather than stylistic assumption.
The La Plage project demonstrates a mechanism hospitality brands can apply: primary source research generates visual vocabulary that competitors cannot easily replicate because the vocabulary emerges from specific materials rather than general stylistic tropes. Studio Born's two and a half month creative process encompassed typography research, hand-sketched illustrations digitized with depth and dimension, material selection for every touchpoint from coasters to staff uniforms, and specialized printing techniques including gold foil stamping. The comprehensive execution earned recognition through a Golden A' Design Award in Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design. For brand managers considering nostalgic positioning, the practical lesson involves investment timing. Adequate research phases before creative development yield differentiated outcomes that guests recognize as genuine even when they cannot identify the specific sources.
Authentic nostalgic brand identity requires going beyond obvious era markers to discover the underlying textures that made a period distinctive. The La Plage success in Istanbul demonstrates that research-driven brand development creates immersive guest experiences that feel transportive and memorable. What archival sources might inform your brand's visual vocabulary?
