PepsiCo Design and Innovation Partners with Brazilian Artists to Amplify Black Creative Expression
Packaging becomes a cultural platform when brands partner through established institutions already embedded in communities.
A chip bag traveled from factory to festival to supermarket shelf, carrying the creative visions of three artists whose work shapes one of Latin America's largest cultural celebrations. The Doritos Fiera Preta 2024 packaging by PepsiCo Design and Innovation accomplished something remarkable: transforming everyday snack packaging into a platform for artists connected to Feira Preta, the biggest event of Black culture in Latin America. PepsiCo partnered directly with Preta Comics, an initiative from the Feira Preta Institute that has spent sixteen years building pathways for Black artists. The artists selected brought perspectives shaped by lived experience and participation in a community dedicated to elevating creative expression. Each bag became a miniature traveling exhibition reaching audiences far beyond typical gallery walls.
The partnership structure reveals a template for brands seeking authentic cultural engagement. By working through an established cultural institution already embedded in the community, PepsiCo gained access, credibility, and guidance that create authentic connection. The Feira Preta Institute provided the connective tissue between global brand resources and local artistic talent, ensuring the collaboration honored cultural context. The project earned a Silver A' Design Award in Packaging Design for 2025, recognition that validates both the design execution and the cultural partnership model underlying the work. For brand managers evaluating similar initiatives, the mechanism suggests a specific approach: identify organizations already doing the work of cultural preservation and artistic development, then build relationships that extend beyond single campaigns.
Packaging that carries cultural meaning creates value impossible to achieve through decoration alone. The Doritos Fiera Preta project demonstrates that authenticity emerges from partnership depth, institutional relationships, and genuine commitment to amplifying voices. What established cultural organizations in your market might serve as bridges between your brand and communities whose stories deserve broader platforms?
