Hungarian folk art motifs become generative design systems in this Silver A' Design Award winning museum catalogue
Generative design rooted in traditional craft creates publications people treasure as genuine collectibles.
One thousand catalogues. One thousand unique objects. The Zoom Exhibition Catalogue by Zoltan Berta accomplishes something remarkable: each copy features a distinct inner spine pattern generated algorithmically from Hungarian folk art embroidery motifs. When visitors to the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest purchase the catalogue, they receive something no other person on earth possesses. The bold red square format (225 by 225 millimeters) immediately signals cultural context, since red dominates Hungarian folk art traditions. Swiss binding creates a revealing moment when the cover opens, exposing the unique decorative pattern beneath. The publication transforms from information delivery mechanism into personal artifact. Recipients do not merely read and shelve the catalogue. They display it, photograph it, share it, discuss its uniqueness with friends.
The economic model deserves attention from any brand commissioning print materials. Traditional limited editions either produce identical copies or accept prohibitive costs for handcrafted variations. Berta's generative approach shifts investment from production to development. Once the algorithmic system drawing from traditional embroidery logic was established, producing variations cost the same as producing copies. Uniqueness came essentially free. The catalogue, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in Print and Published Media Design in 2025, demonstrates heritage assets can inform contemporary design systems. Material selection reinforced the concept: Pergraphica Colours 330g Imperial Red cover, Munken Lynx interior pages, translucent inserts creating layering effects. Every element serves the central idea that standard catalogues become forgettable while unique catalogues become treasured possessions.
The Zoom catalogue answers a question every brand should ask: what printed materials do we create that recipients currently discard? Strategic design investment can transform functional publications into collectible brand assets. When algorithms generate variation rooted in meaningful heritage, mass production and genuine individuality coexist beautifully.
