Modular Personal Care Architecture Creates Ecosystem Revenue Through Component Based Relationships
Focus transforms a commodity shower brush into an ecosystem of ongoing customer relationships.
The shower brush occupies a peculiar position in personal care: universally necessary, rarely reconsidered. Xiaoqin Pan and Antong Xu saw opportunity precisely in overlooked familiarity. Their Focus modular shower brush, created for Daodun with designers Qianhan Liu and Yunsong Liu, transforms a single-purchase commodity into a dynamic system. The handle doubles as a body wash container. Four interchangeable components address different body zones. Users squeeze the grip to dispense product while brushing. The brilliance is in the architecture itself. When a bristle attachment wears out, customers replace that component rather than discarding the entire tool. When seasons change skin needs, users swap handles containing different formulations. Each component becomes a touchpoint, each refill becomes revenue, each customization becomes loyalty.
Focus earned Silver recognition in the A Design Award Beauty, Personal Care and Cosmetic Products Design category for 2025, validation that platform thinking resonates beyond consumer electronics. For brands evaluating personal care portfolios, the implications merit attention. Modular architecture converts traditional one-time transactions into recurring component sales. Body wash handle refills create predictable consumption cycles. Seasonal bristle attachments generate additional purchase occasions. Preference data accumulates with each configuration choice. The recycled plastic construction and component-level replaceability address sustainability requirements while reducing per-customer waste.
