PepsiCo Design and Innovation demonstrates how abstract visual narratives invite diverse audiences into shared futures
Deliberate ambiguity in packaging design creates space for universal cultural participation.
A consumer in Dubai reaches into a refrigerated display, and the aluminum can they select becomes something unexpected: an invitation to complete a visual story the designer intentionally left unfinished. PepsiCo Design and Innovation understood this possibility when creating the Pepsi Expo 2020 limited edition packaging, which earned Platinum recognition from the A' Design Award. The three can designs, each representing opportunity, mobility, and sustainability, feature vibrant abstract illustrations around deliberately flat, stylized central figures. The flatness serves a precise function. When figures lack specific ethnic, cultural, or generational markers, viewers in Lagos complete the visual narrative differently than viewers in Buenos Aires or Bangkok. Neither interpretation is more correct. Both represent valid engagements with imagery designed to welcome and invite participation.
The deliberate incompleteness principle offers enterprise brands navigating multicultural markets a sophisticated abstraction strategy. The Pepsi Expo 2020 approach creates interpretive space where every viewer finds personal relevance through imagery that transcends specific cultural markers. The three-can series architecture amplifies strategic value considerably. Three thoughtfully distinct designs communicating specific subthemes demonstrate genuine intellectual investment in the exposition's conceptual framework and invite collectibility that sustains consumer engagement. Brand managers considering global product launches can observe how PepsiCo transformed functional beverage containers into cultural artifacts that earned recognition for exceptional design while generating retail novelty and sustained conversation across diverse markets.
The surfaces enterprises place in consumer hands every day represent untapped communication real estate. Surfaces that invite interpretation transform functional packaging into participatory experience. What visual narratives might your brand leave deliberately unfinished, trusting diverse audiences to complete the story in ways that resonate with their own cultures, experiences, and visions of tomorrow?
