A Platinum A' Design Award project reveals site constraints as catalysts for architectural breakthroughs
The abandoned mining pit became the project's most defining and remarkable feature.
Beneath Xuedou Mountain in Ningbo, China, a former quarry with 35 meters of dramatic elevation change now holds 4,500 visitors in a single continuous sacred space. Guanghai Cui and the design team achieved the transformation by embracing the abandoned excavation as architectural foundation and defining feature. The Maitreya Dharma project covers the quarry with a flower bud shaped structure, symbolizing the Buddhist belief in Maitreya as a figure of hope and future blossoming. Rock walls left largely in their original state provide authentic texture and historical memory within the completed interior. Organizations inheriting challenging landscapes often find their most distinctive architectural possibilities emerge from the very features that make each site unique. The Maitreya Dharma demonstrates that site constraints can become the defining characteristics of remarkable architecture.
The single-shelled glass roof spanning the colossal interior allows natural light to shift throughout the day, creating atmospheric conditions ideal for contemplation. A central vertical structure houses ventilation, equipment, and structural systems while connecting ground level to rooftop pavilions designed in traditional Chinese style. The 144,997 square meter site now serves as the gateway to Xuedou Mountain Scenic Area, hosting the Maitreya Cultural Festival, religious conferences, exhibitions, and cultural exchange activities throughout the year. The project earned Platinum distinction in the 2023 A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award, recognizing the achievement of transforming challenging terrain into cultural landmark.
