Material choices as narrative architecture turn commercial exhibition centers into cultural storytelling spaces
Unconventional material selection transforms commercial spaces into authentic brand experiences.
The moment jute rope appears alongside Ferrari grey marble in an exhibition hall, visitor perception shifts from evaluating a commercial space to experiencing a cultural narrative. Yutao Song and Ying Chen leveraged this material tension brilliantly when designing the Tianxia Chuanjiang Exhibition Center in Luzhou City, China. The 3,216 square meter space, recognized with a Golden A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design in 2024, deploys materials as narrative agents rather than mere aesthetic choices. Jute rope evokes the ancient boats that carried goods along the Chuanjiang river system, while marble establishes commercial authority befitting serious business negotiations. The four-year development process from 2019 to 2023 allowed every textural relationship to be refined until the space communicated its cultural story with remarkable fluency.
What makes the Tianxia Chuanjiang approach valuable for enterprises is the mechanism behind its effectiveness. Yutao Song and Ying Chen rooted every decision in the specific cultural heritage of Luzhou, a renowned wine production region along the Chuanjiang river system. The design team excavated emotional truths from the region's maritime history: tile eaves, mooring ropes, sheltering houses. Wood grain Lanson panels and light oak finishes soften commercial edges while reinforcing connections to traditional architecture. Red accents reference Chinese cultural associations with prosperity, strategically placed to guide visitor movement. Cultural authenticity creates differentiation competitors simply cannot replicate through imitation. Any brand can purchase marble flooring, but genuine narrative embedded in thoughtfully selected materials requires actual rootedness in specific contexts and histories.
